Summer means sleeping in, staying out late, and getting in shape. This summer, I am determined to work out to make up for the pizza and ice cream that was my staple freshman year of college. But as I huffed and puffed relentlessly on the elliptical almost everyday, I started to wonder if I would ever enjoy getting healthy…
And then I tried Squash.
Of course, I am talking about the sport, not the delicious and versatile vegetable we featured this week… though the name makes it the perfect activity for any active vegan. Squash is a racquet sport that you can play as a single or as a doubles team. Opponents alternate hitting a small, squashable (hence the sport’s name) ball against the four walls of the enclosed court.
It’s the perfect workout for your whole body. In 2003, Forbes Magazine named Squash the healthiest sport to play, as it is a great cardiovascular workout and strengthens your upper and lower body. You can burn up to 1000 calories in an hour of play! There is even a Professional Squash Association!

The real satisfaction from Squash came the next day… I was more sore than I have been in ages. Muscles hurt in places I didn’t even know I had muscles! It feels good to know that a workout was rewarding and fun!
If you are bored with your workout routine, give squash a try! It is the best sport that shares a name with a vegetable that I’ve ever tried… trust me!
