A few weeks ago, Ben & Jerry’s basically broke the internet when they announced the new flavors (Chunky Monkey, Chocolate Fudge, P.B. & Cookies and Coffee Caramel Fudge) in their new non-dairy, vegan line of ice cream. Although there are many vegan brands of this delicious frozen treat, having such a mainstream company embrace vegans means more than just having more choice in the frozen aisle. Who knows how many omni’s will accidently pick up a vegan version, realize it is delicious, and then slowly transform into a level one vegan?
With all the hype surrounding the ice cream I did not care that it was almond-based or the brownies came from a local bakery in upstate New York, my biggest question was how does it taste!
I’d heard rumors that it had been released a bit earlier than expected in New York, but hadn’t seen it at any of my usual grocery stores. Last night, I was randomly walking around Target on Atlantic Ave when some unknown force (possibly Beyoncé) told me to look in the freezers. There staring me in the face with it’s bright yellow letters was every new flavor, but Coffee Caramel Fudge. I screamed! After I pulled myself together, I quickly made my way to the counter so I could hurry home and dig in!
Here’s the two flavors I tried, I will update this list as I consume more flavors!
P.B. & COOKIES
“Vanilla non-dairy frozen dessert with chocolate sandwich cookies & crunchy peanut butter swirls.”
Taste: 10/10
Texture: 9/10
Desirability: 10/10
Best Eaten: Straight out of the jar!
To be honest I had my misgivings at first, I’m not the biggest fan of almond-based ice cream because they’ve been watery in the past, but this is a game changer. My first scoop came up with a huge chunk of cookie with beautiful swirls of peanut butter and I had to steel myself for what I knew was going to be the demise of my waistline. If you’ve of dreamed creamy, peanut buttery deliciousness mixed with crunchy chocolate cookies all your life, this is it!
CHOCOLATE FUDGE BROWNIE
“Chocolate non-dairy frozen dessert with fudge brownies.”
Taste: 7/10
Texture: 9/10
Desirability: 5/10
Best Eaten: In a milkshake or sundae with toppings!
I love chocolate ice cream and I love brownies so I figured this would be a win-win situation, unfortunately it falls a bit flat. It’s not that the ice cream and brownies aren’t delicious, they’re just boring. If you enjoyed the non-vegan version of this you’ll be happy because it tastes the same, I just wished their was some caramel or something else to make the flavors more dynamic.
So far I’m really enjoying their vegan line and hope they continue to wow us with fun new flavors!
